A tiny hero arrives at Where Pigs Fly

Elderly woman smiling while holding a tiny rescue lamb named Vera

Last week we welcomed Vera, a tiny rescue lamb, to Where Pigs Fly Farm Sanctuary. Abandoned at a train station, she is now safe, warm and getting round-the-clock care.

Just days old, Vera the lamb was abandoned in western Sydney last week. A small, defenceless, living being. Vera was handed into the local RSPCA and, as an RSPCA rescue partner, they called us to secure expert care for Vera. She could not stand, weighed 1.5kgs, frail and the tiniest lamb we have ever cared for. We were not sure if she would survive.

Our dear Auntie Vera was grappling after a long, arduous stay in hospital. Back home she was finding it hard to connect with life in any joyful, meaningful way.

I am sure tiny Vera lamb, as young as she is, sensed this – she was happy to just be held in Auntie Vera’s arms. Usually the little lamb would cry for me, but Vera fell sound asleep on Auntie Vera’s lap: a coiled little croissant. Warm, soft and comforting. Auntie Vera smiled, her face lit up like I haven’t seen for quite a while. The magic of animals and the joy and healing they provide should never be underestimated. Debbie
