Mountain Pride Farms - just up the road from us
I don’t know whether to feel sad, furious or just completely exhausted by it all.
Probably all three.
The ABC’s recent report about Mountain Pride Farms, an egg farm in Peats Ridge, Central Coast, is deeply upsetting. And it’s practically on our doorstep.
It’s 2026. How are we still seeing animals suffer like this?
We were already aware of public concerns about the hens wandering onto a busy main road and being killed by passing traffic. We witnessed this ourselves. That was bad enough.
Animal Liberation has since released footage it says was filmed at the farm, showing dead and dying hens in appalling conditions.
And this is a farm that has promoted its eggs as free range and high welfare.
What troubles me most is that, according to NSW MP Abigail Boyd, concerns about the farm were raised with RSPCA NSW, the Department of Primary Industries, NSW Police and Central Coast Council as far back as September 2025.
More than a year ago.
What happened to those reports, and what action was taken to protect the hens?
We spend every day at Where Pigs Fly caring for animals who, for one reason or another, have been failed by humans. We give them the best lives we possibly can. It’s what we do, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
But outside our gates is a very different world. And sometimes I find that too painful to think about.
I often wonder what it is about farmed animals that makes their pain and suffering so easy to ignore.
A dog or cat living in conditions like those in the footage would rightly cause public outrage. Yet somehow, when it’s a farmed animal, we seem to have a different set of rules. I don’t understand it. I don’t think I ever will.
I often wonder what it is about farmed animals that makes their pain and suffering so easy to ignore.
I know we can’t save them all. Twelve years of running a sanctuary has taught me that much.
But surely, as a society, we can do better than this….
Here’s to those who see an animal suffering and can’t walk past.
Here’s to those who keep speaking up, even when no one seems to listen.
And here’s to compassion for every animal, not just the ones we call pets.
Thank you.
We need more of you.
